O'Grady was born to Jim O'Grady and Jan O'Grady. Jim O'Grady works as financial advisor. She was raised by her grandparents in Wheaton in Illinois and was graduated in 1981 with a degree from Wheaton-North High School. The model was featured in a few commercials prior to her move from Wheaton, Illinois to Los Angeles. Her career started as an actress in commercials and models for Montgomery Ward. She had her debut on the big screen in the 1988 romantic comedy She's Having a Baby, and then was cast in the regular character on ABC Drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany.
